Fuji Sanpo

FUJI SANPO
YMCA TOZANSO Nature Program

Thank you very much for your interest in Fuji-Sampo, which means in Japanese a casual hike (Sampo) in Mt.Fuji (Fuji-san). As much as we want to express our gratitude and excitement to host you in this great opportunity, we would also like you to take notice ofthe following information, which allows you and us to have a fun and safe experience.

The trail we prepare for you has a unique natural setting that was characterized by two features: firstly the last eruption that took place about 300 years ago; secondly the avalanches which are traditionally accompanied by the epithet “slashing” due to its devastating effect on the landscape. Mt. Fuji, being the highest and single volcanic cone closely faced to the ocean, accommodates various flora and fauna that can cleverly adjust themselves to this severe and cruel environment to live in. Our hike will show you this struggle observed in the crude system of the Nature that holds nonetheless some beauty and messages to us humans who belong at the end to her as well. We can assure you that our hike is much less athletic, but aims at a leisurely walk with more time to feel and to experience. However, it is crucial for us to be prepared for any weather conditions such as squalls or a sudden drop of temperature. It’s our belief, that any weather has its good way.

Japan’s longest suspension bridge

Full Length /400m  Height/70m   Sidewalk width/1.6m  Height of the main tower/44m

The forests around Mishima Skywalk has been untouched before development, so the first step was to observe and protect rare species.  hey transplant rare plants found in the development area and observe them.  Then, they cut down the old trees and 4,000 trees were newly planted in 7 kinds of trees native to Mt. Hakone, such as Sakura (cherry trees) and maple trees.  Stumps are preserved to prevent a landslide.  In addition, a walkway “Kicoro no mori” was created as an opportunity to get in touch with the forest and get an interest in nature. “Flower drop” (craft) was made using thinning materials with the cooperation of local people with disabilities.

The main tower and main cable are designed strong enough to load 200kg per one square meter. The side wall of the bridge is design column of mesh structure with high transparency for visitors to easily see scenery from the bridge.  The main cables are slightly higher than ordinary pedestrian bridges, and the spacing between the hanging materials (vertical cables) is also wider. It is important to secure wind stability against wind vibration in  large pedestrian suspension bridges.  At Mishima Skywalk, the wind is made to pass easily by the open grating in the center of the walkway and the gap at the end of the walkway (20 mm notch in the concrete panel).  In addition, heavy concrete panels on both sides of the walkway can adjust the shaking. Mishima Skywalk is designed not to be broken even in the case of large earthquakes. To that end, a viscous damper (a damping device that absorbs energy during a large earthquake) between the south main tower and the main girder.

Kakita River Park was opened in April, 1986 in the upstream part of the Kakita River as a place of relaxation for citizens with the purpose of “protection and preservation of nature” and “security of the community open space”.From the first and second observation decks, we can see the spring where the water wells up constantly without changing year-round. We can experience the coldness of the spring water in the YuusuiHiroba-the Spring Square-by putting your foot in the water. In addition, there is a wooden walkway where you can take a walk while watching the Kakita River which is a national designated natural monument. In case of rain, another option is Izu Fruit Park
